The Alfred Rugby Club began its new season with another public service event as part of the Alfred Community Service Day. “Alfred Rugby Club Walks the Line” included policing and picking up trash in the village and town of Alfred along County Route 12. The club began its clean-up from the ServU-FCU on the north side of the village, along Route 12 and over Jericho Hill, and out to the town line with Andover in Elm Valley.
It was the ninth public service event since the fall of 2009, picking up assorted trash and debris and other organic waste. After the clean-up the club had a two-hour practice with the pile of junk on the sideline for inspiration, then transported the debris to
the village for proper disposal.
“Since we spend all our time on Jericho Hill, it seemed a natural for us to clean up the road leading to the field from both directions,” said club president Steve Dahar. “We appreciate being able to serve Alfred University, Alfred State College, the town and
village of Alfred and Allegany County in this effort.”
The club’s first home game is 1 p.m. Saturday on Jericho Hill against long-time rival Hobart College. Alfred split its season series with Hobart in 2010.
In addition, the club dedicated its clean-up efforts to the memory of long-time Alfred Main Street resident Claire Randolph, an Alfred-Almond teacher and 67-year community and team supporter, who met with club members during the many public service duties.
